Laos opens railway to China as de t to Beig rises
BEIG: After a blessing by Buddhist monks, Lao Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh on Friday rode the first run of a $5.9 billion Chinese-built railway that links isolated, mountainous Laos with southern China in an effort to increase trade.
在得到佛教僧侣的祝福后， 总理周五乘坐中国建造的一条耗资59亿美元的铁路的首发列车，这条铁路将与世隔绝、多山的 与中国南部连接起来，促进贸易。
Both go nments tout the 1,035-kilometer (642-mile) line from the Lao capital, Vientiane to Kunming in China’s poor southwest as a boost to economic growth. But it leaves a de t that foreign experts warn Laos, a country of 7 million people wedged between China, Vietnam and Thailand, might struggle to repay.
The railway is one of hundreds of projects under Beig’s Belt and Road Initiative to build ports, railways and other facilities across Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Poor countries welcome the initiative, but some compn they are left owing too much to Chinese banks.
The China-Laos Railway will whisk passengers at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
The project includes 93 tunnels with a total length of 398 km, including 15 exceeding 10 km. The longest of them－the Anding tunnel－stretches for 17.5 km. In addition, the line has 136 bridges with a total length of more than 50 km.
China built the 1035km railway over difficult terrain in 5 years, with many tunnels and tall bridges over deep gorges. Trains run at a modest 160kmph, still 1.6 times faster than India fastest Super Trains. If India were to build such a railway, Indians would talk first for 5 to 10 years, then Modi would inaugurate the project with great fanfare, then Indians try to build it in 50 years, with 100 times cost overrun. Then Indian would boast it for another 100 years how great India is
如果 要修建这样一条铁路， 人要先讨论5到10年，然后莫迪会大张旗鼓地启动该项目，然后印度人会花50年才把铁路建好，成本超支100倍。
The Indian media is really disgusting and another example of deliberately misleading Indians. “China’s poor southwest”? There are three provinces and one municipality directly under the central go nment in Southwest China, namely Yunnan Province, Gui Province, Sichuan Province and Chongqing city. Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province, has a population of 8.46 million and a subway mileage of 140 km. In 2020, Kunming’s GDP was 673 billion yuan (RMB). The capital city of Gui Province is Guiyang, with a population of 6 million.
The subway mileage of Guiyang is 36 kilometers. In 2020, Guiyang’s GDP is 431 billion yuan (RMB). Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, has a population of 20.9 million, a subway mileage of 520 kilometers, and a GDP of 1770 billion yuan (RMB) in 2020. Chongqing is a municipality directly under the central go nment, with a population of 32.1 million, a subway mileage of 450 km, and a GDP of 2500 billion yuan (RMB) in 2020. The fundamental reason why Indians are stupid is that Indian media deliberately make Indians stupid. Why? By the end of 2020, the mileage of Expressway in Yunnan Province is 9000 km. The mileage of Expressway in Gui Province is 10096 km. The mileage of Expressway in Sichuan Province is 8000 km. The expressway mileage of Chongqing municipality directly under the central go nment is 3096 km. China’s expressway driving standards are designed for 120 km / h. As for the mileage of high-speed rail with operating speed above 250 km / h, as of December 2020, it is 1074 km in Yunnan Province, 1505 km in Gui Province and 1577 km in Sichuan Province. Idiot Indian media, how credible are the other information you reported?
至于运营速度在250 km/h以上的高铁，截至2020年12月，云南省为1074 km，贵州省为1505 km，四川省为1577 km。
whats really di sgus ting is your yellow jello bateating face!!
Does Laos really Need such en exorbitantly expensive hi-speed train to China, at a cost of nearly $6 billion, one-third of its current GDP, when what it really need is well built medium-speed train service for the entire country. The country that really benefits the most from this deal is China…because the mandarins need to find work for its armies of workers in Govt-owned construction companies and industries, so uses the we-build-it, you-pay-for-it mode of govt-to-govt deals, calling it ‘economic aid’. Laos will now be in hock to them for eons, like Lanka and a host of other nations caught in the mandarins de t trap
Indians are happy with their never on time trains crawling at 50kmph. They expect others to enjoy the same kind of nonsense as Indian do. If not, it’s anti-India. Indians may enjoy defecating in the open on rail tracks, don’t expect others to imitate primitive Indians.
Not big deal. India also built a 34km railway in Nepal and handed over 2 ultra modern trains to Nepal that ran at a record breaking speed of 40kmph. India technology is world best.
Jealous but impent Indians vomiting sour juice. All Indians can do is to smear China.
Indians should worry about India’s external de t: 570 billions $ and increasing.. Indians should also know how much USA is in de t: 29 trillion $ and rising much faster than India. Indians should declare both India and USA are doomed.
This is very beneficial to Laos. It’s a wonderful thing, connectivity.
Well, that is a nice de t trap for Lao. I hope someone could setup a trap like that for me.
30%Lao 70% China.
I’m a Mysian and yes this is true, there’s a mega project in Mysia similar to this, where a rail sy em from Singapore connecting all the way to Thailand is being built. It is a win win situation but china may be seeking for dominance
This is a win-win. Yes there is de t. But without that, Laos will never have a good chance to attract tourists and investment. And this is only the first phase of ASEAN railway network. This line will be extended to Singapore.
The 1000 km rail was built on 136 bridges and bored through 93 tunnels.
I guess the importance of China is increasing although they are trying to tell us otherwise.
They don’t tell you the basic fact. This is a joint venture. The de t is paid from the operation revenue, not the go nment. If it fails, the investors take the risk.
China’s new neighbor is now Cambodia
When your country is in decline because of bad management, it is only common sense to spur hatred ag inst others, because of envy!
Obviously, you don’t understand 21st century colonialism.
European needs a Chinese style de t trap for a better future
China can help the PEOPLE of Myanmar prosper also.
This rail construction is tough construction as well as Alps mountaineer rail lines.
160 km/h top speed is NOT high speed rail, not to mention backing up the huge loans with Laos’ land and natural resources as collateral.
Yes faster than ur country
China is building the infrastructure we will one day use for ourselves
$5.9 billion in de t, Laos can’t repay the loan, they sold their sovereignty.
@Paul L exactly that is what is what the belt road is really all about.
China says jump, laos will say how high—thats what china means by a common future
We should destroy this railway to counter Asian influences
Tejas Uttam Aher
Today they(China) developed your railway, Airport etc tomorrow they grab this for 99 years,
In few years Laos will be facing bankruptcy.
